Q. How long is the program?
A. The certificate takes 1 year or 2 semesters to complete. The AAS degree takes 2 years or 4 semesters to complete.


Q. May I start at any time during the year?
A. No, We start a new class every fall, usually near the end of August.


Q. Do I have to take general education classes?
A. No, only if you want the degree or certificate. You may be accepted into, and take gunsmithing classes without taking or transferring English, Math, Science, etc. but you will not receive a diploma upon completion.


Q. How many hours are required daily to satisfy the gunsmithing requirements?
A. You are required to be present approx. 6 hours daily.


Q. What are the daily hours of the gunsmithing lab?
A. The doors open at 8:00am and close at 5:00pm. Monday thru Friday.


Q. What will I learn?
A. (1) Machine shop, a great deal of gunsmithing is metalworking, therefore considerable amount of time is spent in the shop learning operations and special techniques relevant to the trade. (2) Function, disassembly, assembly, and customizing of rifles, shotguns, and handguns. (3) Stock making, starting with a blank, duplicate, inlet, bed, fit, shape, install hardware, finish, and checker a stock for your rifle. (4) Fitting barrels on rifles and handguns, consisting of threading, chambering, crowning, and custom contours. (5) How to correctly and accurately install metallic, and optic sights.
(6) Metal refinishing, including black oxide, phosphate, slow rust, and nitre bluing.
(7) Internal and external ballistics. (8) Computer aided drafting. (9) Computer numerical control machining. (10) Engraving, this is an optional class.


Q. What is the cost of tuition?
A. Arizona residents $310 (10 credits)

Western States including:

Remaining States $2390 (10 credits)


Q. What can I expect to pay for tools?
A. This depends on your preferences and how many you already possess. If you have no tools, approximately $3000.00 should cover it.


Q. After I graduate is it possible to find a job?
A. Yes, We are frequently asked for names of good gunsmiths.
