Prescott is known as "Everybody's
Hometown" because of it's friendly atmosphere four-season climate
and idyllic setting, nestled a mile high in the Bradshaw Mountains. The
Roughrider statue in the town square is at 5, 200 feet in altitude.
The main campus of Yavapai College
lies on the former parade grounds of Fort Whipple, Arizona. This is the
exact location that Theodore /Roosevelt's Roughriders gathered and drilled
before shipping out for the charge at San Juan Hill.
Prescott maintains a strong
connection to it's historical heritage as one of the earliest established
towns on the western frontier. Sturm Ruger is the largest employer in
the county and businesses such as Ransom Rest, Gunsite, Davidson's West,
Blacksmith Publications, Wolfe Publishing, J&G Sales, Yavapai Firearms
Academy, American Small Arms Academy and other nationally and internationally
famous firearm businesses located here.
Known personalities like Bill
Ruger, Fred Wells, Bill Atkinson, Chuck Taylor, Jeff Cooper, Rachel Wells,
Paul Marquart, Dave LeGate, and Al Miller have chosen to live in Prescott.
The entire region is beautiful,
spanning a range of desert to pine forest climates. Prescott is surrounded
by the mountainous Prescott National Forest, and numerous lakes for fishing
are nearby. Grand Canyon National Park is 3 hours north, and the Phoenix
valley is less than 2 hours drive south. The world famous red-rock scenery
of Sedona and the Verde Valley is located right in Yavapai County.
There are a variety of
shooting ranges in the area including trap, skeet, 5 stand, sporting clays,
rifle, outdoor pistol and an indoor pistol range for we weather. An Olympic
grade shooting range (Ben Avery Range) is about an hours drive away.
Informal shooting is permitted
in most areas of the National Forest and BLM land (about 80% of the state).
Plentiful deer, elk, mountain lions, bear, javelina, and various small
game inhabit the state.
